1st Corinthians 8:5-6: For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth - as indeed there are many 'gods" and many "lords" - yet for us there is on God, the Father from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
There are many things, people, and places that are important to people. Some of these things, and many people will not admit this, that are "god like." Many people won't admit this because they don't believe in gods. To those people who do not think that people, things, and places are "god like," know this: any person, place, or thing that is elevated to the position of influence over your life, something or someone that you just can't do without, that is a god. And these "gods" and "lords" in the long run do you no good. For example, if your "god" is your career and you are all about being successful in your career. You may achieve the position that you want. Yet what is the cost? Was it family? Was it health? And how long do you think that you'll stay on top? Then what?
So let's think about this knowledge. Any "god" in this world is finite, temporary, and potentially dangerous to your eternal life. At the same time, realize this. There is only ONE GOD, the Father of us all, the creator of heaven and earth and everything in it. There is only the SON JESUS who is your Savior and Lord who died on the cross, saved you from your sins, and gave to you a new life in and with God the Father. And there is the Holy Spirit guiding you to know, believe, and trust God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and opening you up to a new and true knowledge. For example, there is nothing wrong with having a great career. It's just not the end all and be all. Realize and know and believe that God gave you the skills, intellect, and drive to have a career. Use it to His glory and honor. What's the "cost?" Having a life balanced with God, family, and career, knowing forgiveness and love from God. Holy Spirit, lead us to experience this balance more fully.
